Pousadas
I would keep it if it is for Portugal, maybe add in brackets historic house. Are as known as the Paredores in Spain.

Hi Lia,
I am pretty sure this refers to Portugal - your list says 42 Pousadas, my website talks about "over 40".

Aoife Kennedy
: Yes, I would keep the Portuguese word but explain in brackets what a pousada is - an exclusive hotel, in the case of Portugal.

cheers - only if the text is from Portugal - in which case Estalagem (the next question) is also not just a simple Inn :-)

I know in Spain they have a national chain of paradores....I would call it a Luxury Inn....and I would not leave the Portuguese..that is not necessary

alternative: in the sentence: pousadas [italicized] or country inns,
that's how to handle it in a text

: I disagree about it not being necessary to leave the Portuguese word. Maybe that's just because I have come to identify with the word "pousada", having lived in Portugal. Also, I would say "hotel" rather than "inn", which is different in the UK.

hotels are usually pretty urban in Europe...many of these pousadas are inn-like...
