[…] I had learnt that Victoria Falls was only twenty-odd miles away and that a bus went there regularly from the hotel I was in. So the next morning I boarded the bus.
From where I sat— next to the driver’s seat—I missed what was going on in the vehicle. When finally I turned around, probably because of a certain unnatural silence, I saw with horror that everyone around me was white.
What happened with all the black people at the bus stop? Why had no one told me?
I looked back again and only then took in the detail of a partition and a door. I often ask myself what I might have done if I had noticed the separate entrances before I boarded; and I am not sure.
Anyhow, there I was sitting next to the driver’s seat in a Jim Crow bus in Her Majesty’s colony of Northern Rhodesia, now known as Zambia. The driver (black) came aboard, looked at me with great surprise, but said nothing. The ticket collector appeared as soon as the journey started.

[…] Soube que as Cataratas de Vitória ficavam a apenas uns trinta quilômetros de distância, e que tinha um ônibus que ia para lá, saindo do hotel onde eu estava hospedado. Então, na manhã seguinte embarquei no ônibus.
Do lugar onde sentei – ao lado do banco do motorista – não percebi o que aconteceu na parte de trás do veículo. Quando finalmente me virei, talvez por causa de um silêncio estranho, vi, com horror, que todo mundo ao meu redor era branco.
O que aconteceu com todas aquelas pessoas negras no ponto de ônibus? Por que ninguém me falou nada?
Olhei para trás novamente, e só então percebi o detalhe da divisória e a porta. Eu me pergunto às vezes o que teria feito se tivesse notado as entradas separadas antes de embarcar; e não tenho certeza.
Enfim, lá estava eu, sentado perto do motorista, num ônibus vindo direto da era Jim Crow*, na colônia de Sua Majestade, a Rodésia do Norte - hoje em dia conhecida como Zâmbia. O motorista (negro) embarcou, olhou para mim muito surpreso, mas não disse nada. O cobrador apareceu assim que o o ônibus partiu.

Bio
I have a Bachelor of Arts and Teacher's Degree in English Language and Literatures by Uerj (Rio de Janeiro State University). At the moment, I am taking another graduation course at the same university, this time in Portuguese and Japanese Languages and Literatures.
My first language is Brazilian Portuguese, and I speak fluent English and basic Japanese. I have a TOEFL ITP Certificate (Level C1), taken in 2019, and the Japanese Language Proficiency Test N5 Certificate. Currently, I am studying to take the CPE Cambridge Exam.
During the graduation course, I took optional courses on translation, Portuguese grammar and writing style, and other subjects. I produced a variety of translations, articles, texts and analysis, both on English and in Portuguese; the best ones can be read on my portfolio, at [www.elizabethpereira.wordpress.com].
I also have a Youtube Channel focused on subtitling: it is my main personal project, in which I translate subtitles form English to Portuguese so that people in Brazil can have access to content I find interesting and/or relevant. On 2017, I worked as an interpreter during a conference on Korean Politics (Conferência Crise Coreana: Balanços e Perspectivas) which featured Mr Sang-Woo Lim, a
counsellor from the Republic of Korea Embassy. It took place at Rio de Janeiro Federal University.
My first job was at a course, teaching Brazilian Portuguese for foreigners who lived in Brazil
(immigrants and internship students), from levels A1 to C2. I also participated in the production and revision of didactic materials.
Currently, I am an English Teacher at WOWL Education, a language course based in Rio. I work mainly with English alphabetization of Brazilian kids, teaching young learners from ages 4 to 12.
