significant challenge
The meaning of pregnant here, I think.
Peer comment(s):

tradu-grace
: I personally prefer 'pressing' but significant is a good option.

daunting/difficult/forceful/strong/formidable challenge
something that is prégnant grabs your attention.
Peer comment(s):
agree |
tradu-grace
: even 'formidable' is a good option IMHO even though I prefer 'pressing' still.

: I think 'striking' which you suggested in Discussion, best conveys the Larousse definition which you cited.

expected challenge(s)
I'd make this plural.
I quite like your "emerging" but think it is more "expected" here as they expect =(think it likely) in this climate that there will be challenges.

salient challenge
I think the translation needs to convey a sense that the challenges are "very real", or "in your face", rather than of urgency or imminent danger if not addressed.
Definitions of prégnant:
Qui s'impose avec une grande force. Synon. pressant.
Qui s'impose à l'esprit d'une manière très forte.
Definitions of salient:
Standing out; conspicuous; prominent; striking.
Worthy of note; pertinent or relevant.
... figuratively, forcing itself on the attention...
having a quality that thrusts itself into attention

défis prégnants
crucial challenges
an alternative to the urgency that i feel "pressing" conveys.
Example sentence:
"However, she also points out that one of the most crucial challenges facing the sector is to encourage..."
"Martin warns on crucial challenges facing church"

défis prégnants
burning issues
Seems the most natural choice of words to me. Here's one link:
http://www.liv.ac.uk/events/burning-issues/
Addressing the burning issues of today which are shaping the economies and business environments of the future

Though I suppose something that's burning is urgent...
Maybe one of the other adjectives would go better:
key issues
vital issues
important issues

palpable challenge(s)
How about "palpable" as a way of expressing the tension, significance of the challenges?
Example sentence:
...the palpable challenges our sector is facing...
