A PM told me today. It will hit them hard, he said, and here is an excerpt of a press release (please find the full version here: http://globalwatchtower.com/2008/02/11/sdl-buys-idiom/ ):

"Who is affected by this acquisition? The list is endless, beginning with the enterprises that chose Idiom for its independence and forthright refusal to “take a dime for translation services.” Then there’s the LSPs who decided to cast their lot with Idiom rather than build their own or rely on SDL; executive teams at these companies are gathering in war rooms as we speak to figure out their strategy."

What does this mean to freelance translators?

Do we all have to invest in various expensive software now, simply to be compatible with our outsourcers? The outsourcers' expenses will increase. Will this affect our rates?

Thanks for this Feb 12, 2008

It really is quite scary but I guess it shouldn't be surprising as it's happening worldwide in just about every industry you can think of!
