Spanish term

cera de miel de abeja

Spanish to English Other Cooking / Culinary
utilización de la cera de miel de abejas

a culinary technique, apparently - appears in a list so no more context - is this just the use of beeswax?

Discussion

PB Trans Jan 18, 2006:
Honeybees make beeswax from honey and pollen, so it's edible: http://www.ent.iastate.edu/zoo/lessonplans/honeybee.html
Paul Lambert (asker) Jan 18, 2006:
Beeswax Hi all - I have just checked with the client and apparently, yes, it is beeswax. He seemed as bemused as I was, but it is a recently-unveiled new technique from an avant-garde Spanish chef, and apparently "tiene un sabor espectacular" - think I might just have to take their word for it!!!
PB Trans Jan 18, 2006:
Could this be the culinary technique (using beeswax to make molds)? http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9...
Me parece que son dos productos por separado: la cera y la miel. Suena extrao que hablen de "cera de miel de abejas", en vez de slo "cera de abejas".

Please, see:

Beeswax. La cera de abeja es un producto natural, producido por la abeja.

It's not edible but it is a technique.

Peer comment(s):

agree Simon Bruni : i can't think why they would use "cera" if it was anything but beeswax!

...since this is in a culinary context and they source text goes to the trouble of phrasing it in this particular manner (as Ma. Teresa points out). hth
Peer comment(s):

agree María Teresa Taylor Oliver : "A honeycomb is a mass of hexagonal wax cells built by honeybees in their nests to contain their larvae and stores of honey and pollen." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeycomb | Precisely, the honeycomb is a delicacy, I think, but not the wax!!! ;-)

Ma. Teresa, hi there. Thank you. I do believe in a culinary list this makes most sense. Saludos : )//this is very helpful, Ma. Teresa. I do believe as children we ate the whole thing! ; ))
neutral muitoprazer (X) : there's some confusion here.beeswax in u.k is a polish using the wax from the honeycomb,bee's honey is used in cooking,food refs in u.k to honeycomb don't actually contain it,more linked to structure and sweetness.

Muitoprazer, in the USA,in ordinary cooking as well as in culinary schools (I trained at one)honey for pastry is kept in the comb to preserve it for use and the comb, wax and all occasionally garnishes a plate of pastries or the pastry itself.
agree Refugio : In a culinary context, it is likely to be honeycomb, although just possibly Pina is right.

neutral muitoprazer (X) : yes,but this a culinary question!

agree PB Trans : Just "beeswax". The rest is redundant, as is the Spanish "cera de miel de beja". It simply means "cera de abeja". Beeswax begins in the honey. http://www.stroopebeeandhoney.com/beeswax.htm
