German to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Membranspeicher
"Hierzu wurden wir durch das XXX dahingehend informiert, dass die Klemmlänge als Distanz zwischen Schraubenauflage und Beginn des Mutterngewindes definiert ist. Ausweislich der als Anlage 4 beigefügten VDI-Richtlinie liegt eine ausreichende Klemmlänge bei etwa 3 bis 5fachem Gewindenenndurchmesser, also hier:

3..5x42=126 .. 210 mm.

Hiervon ausgehend beträgt im vorliegenden Fall die Klemmlänge jedoch l.k praktisch Null."

I can't tell if it is a capital "I" or a lowercase "L" (I think it's the latter) because it's a Pdf document in arial.

Okay thanks for the additional info, Kenneth, I get you now. I think I will leave it off - it only appears once. The technical bits of this (otherwise straightforward) translation are killing me! :-(

I also agree with Steffen's comment above -- the word order is wrong. This sort of notation and wording is common in engineering texts, especially in German.

Derek: there's no 'definitive' abbreviation for 'clamp(ing) length', and anyhow this isn't an abbreviation, it's a symbol in the mathmatical sense. You could use lc (with a subscripted c), but you could just as well ignore it unless it's used elsewhere.

Great research So what would that be in English? Would it be "CL?" I can't seem to find a definitive abbreviation for "clamp length."

Yes, lowercase L (length = L�nge) and subscript k (= Klemm-), perhaps even written "l,k" (l + comma + subscript k). Also, the German word sequence needs to be changed to "betr�gt im vorliegenden Fall die Klemml�nge ***l.k jedoch*** praktisch Null" (IMHO)

Hi Jonathan No, it's not the number 1 - in arial you can tell the difference between 1 and l (or I). The lack of a second period is bothering me too. To make things worse, the sentence actually makes sense to me without this wierd "abbreviation."
I also don't think this is "laut Kunde" - this is a letter from one insurance company to another. They seem to be fighting over who has to pay for the policy holder's losses caused by fire.

By analogy, the abbreviation convention for clamp length seeems to be > Lc
