Discussion

Anna Quail Mar 14, 2006:
mediamatrix: 1) SHE is suggesting a totally appropriate translation;-) 2) This is "In a Birth Certificate after text naming the deponent, the child, the information regarding the birth, etc."
and the only possible interpretation is "jugement rendu".
Jennifer Levey Mar 14, 2006:
FrenchtoEnglish is quoting a criminal judgement, which is entirely different to a birth certificate. It's no wonder he is suggesting an inappropriate translation for 'Rendu de ...'. A birth certificate is a certified statement of facts, not a 'ruling'.
Anna Quail Mar 14, 2006:
OOPS Sorry ICETRANCE :-) I'll copy the rest of the sentence while I'm at it. "...infractions concernant la rébellion, l'outrage et les menaces de mort ont été retenues.
Les 3 frères ont obtenu la meme peine..."
Anna Quail Mar 14, 2006:
For ICETRANS - yes this is French!!! See for example http://paris.indymedia.org/article.php3?id_article=52157
"Rendu de jugement pour les 3 frères de Montreuil

I've never seen "rendu DE" before. Please enlighten me on this. Prepositions---I love them! Rendu de nous? Rendu=can mean "rendered" (yes, "rendered" is English")
Rendre de nous--no clue! Is this French?

Short for jugement rendu . Ruling by Judge so-and-so... In this case it is the judge who is pronouncing the ruling.

The exact sentence would be: "I, Judge Alix XXX hereby rule that..." You can google "I hereby rule that" for confirmation.

Don't know whether my example for ICETRANCE was very clear, so here are a few others, showing that "rendu" means "jugement rendu":

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you. Although I had some missgivings to use "Ruling by" in this context, I went with this translation since it is the closest to the original expression. It is weird though that it would be stated like that in a Birth Certificate. However some times official documents don't make any sense. Thanks for your help and everyone else for their comments and the other answer too. "

disagree Adam Warren : This is elliptical for "[Jugement] rendu de nous, therefore "ruling" is involved
