Clinical trial report....I know this is in the glossary in different contexts, would this just be something along the lines of a rivet, something that locks the cages to the floor? TIA, Jason.

agree Stuart Allsop : In this case, yes, it is important to add "wood". Just "shavings" by itself would be ambiguous.

shavings / saw-dust

I think it refers to the shavings / saw-dust on the bottom of mouse cages etc.
