Spanish term

soy académico de la asignatura de Anatomía Humana

Spanish to English Medical Education / Pedagogy
Could anybody enlighted on the translation of "académico". This is a letter from Chile and I am not sure if this is referring to an "Academician" or simply a "Profesor" . This extract comes from a letter written by a Profesor about his student.

Peer comment(s):

agree Marcelo González : professor of Human Anatomy / many people use "professor" in a general way (i.e., not all of them actually hold the rank of "(full) professor"

thank you Marcelo!
agree Robert Copeland : perfect!!-yes

thanks Robert!
agree Heidi C : I teach sounds natural in English. Professor runs the risk of using a title the person does not have. El espanol suena un poco a la verborrea acostumbrada en las cartas... Saludos :)

I am a lecturer (an academic) in Human Anatomy

I think lecturer is the safest choice (in AUS and UK) if you do not whether this person is a Professor, Associate Professor, etc

An academic may not necessarily teach (he/she may be devoted completely to research and supervision) but if this person teaches... I would then go for "lecturer"

academic

I think you could just use academic i.e. "I am an academic in the area of......"

As you can see in the following thesaurus entry, it can also be student!
