living hedge
I find "hedges" alone not enough.
Having worked in this field quite extensively, the (source) term provided to me, several times, was "living hedge", from different authors and for different (tropical) plants, as it's common practice throughout the world.
I found an occurrence of the term in the link below.

As explained by our colleagues "living" hedge means that the hedge is made of plant species that are thick or bushy enough to make a hedge/fence.

Note from asker:
Hi Lauren does it actually mean in the context (environment protection) a 'live' barrier? |
4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer.
Comment: "Thanks to all. I'm choosing this as Laure has come across it a few times....."

hedges
While "haie vive" does refer to a particular type of hedge, it is generally (mis)used for hedges in general.
At least it seemed to me that "haie vive" referred to one comprising particular types of plants. The following suggests it is simply in opposition to a wooden fence or a dead hedge!!!

To the best of my knowledge, in English a hedge has never been anything other than a live one. Note that we also have the word "hurdle" – "a portable frame made of interlaced twigs etc. used as a temporary fence or enclosure" – and that the 100-m hurdle running event is the "100 m haies".
And in case anyone knows a place called "Le Plessis", the word comes from the folding of hedge branches into gaps in the hedge to fill it in, in much the same way as hurdles are formed (from dead wood).

Presumably, then, in the absence of any specific indications of what is meant, "haie" (in the "enclosure" sense) should be translated as "hedge, hurdle, or fence" !!!

: Just "hedge" was my initial reaction, given a) the murs "secs" just before an b) the potential confusion with any other kind of "haie" - the 100m sort being exactly what I was going to mention !

multi-species hedge
