Czech term

okenní ostění

Czech to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
Here's a good one to chew on...

Here's the context:
Zachovaly se i renesanční vstupní portály, okenní ostění a ve východním křídle zámku i rozsáhlé klenuté sklepy

suhlasim s pavlom, treba zobrat do uvahy kontext
Igor Liba Feb 5, 2008:
Sarka Rubkova Feb 5, 2008:
Reveal is visible part of a jamb in which lies between the glass (or door) and wall.
Slay is the same but diagonally cut. ) Source: Fleming, Honour, Pevsner: Dictionary of architecture
Sarka Rubkova Feb 5, 2008:
Takže Vás zase poučím o terminologii architektury: Jamb is vertical flank of wall opening to the full thickness of the wall. Definition from John S. Scott: Dictionary of building
Igor Liba Feb 5, 2008:
OSTENIE, ŠPALETA - zvislé okraje múrov, ktoré vymedzujú okná a dvere; postranné časti otvoru okien a dvier; môžu byť pravouhlé, alebo zošikmené - http://www.hrady.sk/?dic=list&from=75
Sarka Rubkova Feb 5, 2008:

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for answering and mainly for waiting. I had to get together with a friend who restores churches and paintings, with a pretty darn good background in this stuff...Based on his explanation, I believe this (window) jamb to be the most accurate, but I am still reluctant to add it to the glossary. I can see it was quite a hot potato."

window tapering or entasis

Given the context, the term seems to refer to window tapering, which is a type of gradual slimming of a bulge or relevant ornate decoration. The window example of tapering is seen in fig. 125 in the second link.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Sarka Rubkova : bohožul to ostění není, viz definice ostění výše

If the original style of the text is very technical without many adj., then jamb is certainly a possible option. Otherwise, the term tapering provides a reference to the renaissance style of the particular opening.

without "windows" to describe where? thanks Pavle
Peer comment(s):

disagree Sarka Rubkova : Ostění je pouze svislá část - není kolem dokola. Countours given to projecting members. The same source as above. In Czech: ozdobná římsa or

no, ostění is not just vertical--it is the framing all around a window hole. and ostění now is completely different from ostění in the renaissance period. pls. use this context in your peer comments. thanks.

Carter B Horsley - The Upper East Side Book - "The building has a one-story rusticated limestone base and a canopied entrance with a doorman beneath an attractive, rusticated limestone window reveal on the second floor and a very impressive and ornate limestone window reveal on the third floor flanked by female figures"
