Discussion

Dima ATZ (asker) Mar 25, 2008:
Yes I agree, thanks Victoria.
Victoria Porter-Burns Mar 25, 2008:
In that case I'd agree with the support for viva madrid's 'housing cooperative', definitely not 'housing association', although I'd welcome others people's views.
Dima ATZ (asker) Mar 25, 2008:
Well I could copy the provision itself, I hope it helps:

"Cuando se oferte, promueva o publicite con la finalidad de incorporar personas socias o asociadas a cooperativas de viviendas, además del cumplimiento de las restantes obligaciones en el Reglamento, se deberá mencionar expresamente que no se trata de una oferta de venta sino de incorporación a una actividad empresarial de construcción de viviendas cuyos resultados económicos se imputarán a las socias y los socios."
Victoria Porter-Burns Mar 25, 2008:
@Tom - You're right - I haven't had time to read it.
@Dima - Yes, I suppose either could apply to that context. Any other clues in the text as to which applies here?
Dima ATZ (asker) Mar 25, 2008:
Cooperative/Association Yes I've also read that there's a difference between housing cooperatives and associations, but I'm not sure which one of them applies to the text I'm translating. It's basically a Law passed in Andalucía about giving consumers their right to ask real estates for free information about the property that they're interested in.
Adrian MM. (X) Mar 25, 2008:
You still haven't looked at the statute. Otherwise, you'd have picked up that it's 1988. Besides, not all UK council estate and housing assoc. tenants are malingerers.
Victoria Porter-Burns Mar 24, 2008:
It is not a comment regarding a particular answer; it's a warning to the asker of the difference between the two. And 'housing association' accomodation definitely has negative connotations wherever I've heard it used.
Adrian MM. (X) Mar 24, 2008:
Victoria - could you pls. post your comments next to the relevant answers, the negative connotations being a questionable claim since the UK Housing Act 1989 with its introduction of housing action trusts.
Victoria Porter-Burns Mar 24, 2008:
Beware - 'housing cooperative' and 'housing association' are too completely different things in the UK, the latter having somewhat negative connotations relating to associations giving houses to people who very rarely work, or have low incomes etc.

The housing association houses I have seen are usually very nice and well looked after. Yes, they are for 'poor' people but usually they do work although their salaries may be low.

Another option would be: social housing project/scheme
See:

"Built in the 1970s, Angell Town was a fortress of poorly constructed concrete blocks connected by high-level bridges, with garages dominating the ground level. Regeneration of this entirely social housing scheme has been driven by the community. Nearly 600 units have either been refurbished or newly built. The design is subtle but the variety and quality of materials used such as render, brick, glass and timber, and innovative design features such as striking white rendered staircases, make a statement."
