Water is central to food production and food security and a strong relationship exists between forests and water. Forests play a key role in the reduction of soil erosion and consequent siltation of water catchment areas; promotion of infiltration and percolation of rainwater into the soil, releasing some through streams and springs while the rest recharges underground aquifers; and *buffering hydro-meteorological extremes*.
