French term

réserve (tie-dying context)

French to English Other Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Tie-dying
This is from a document relating to the origins and evolution of tie-dying in various parts of the world. I have so far translated 'teinture à réserve' as 'tie-dying', but now the 'réserves' are being discussed in their own right, in such sentences as:

"Les réserves mettent hors d’atteinte de la teinture certaines portions d’un tissu."

"Les variantes sont très nombreuses, jouant sur la nature de la fibre, la structure et la texture du tissu, le type de réserves, les motifs et la mise en couleurs."

"Le tissu est alors teint, puis les réserves sont retirées."

Are these 'réserves' some sort of band that is tied round the fabric to prevent the ink from seeping through? In which case, how many types can there be?? Or am I on the wrong track?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

TIA

Vicky

By the way, should be 'dyeing'

Thanks for that - sounds just about right. Is there a noun I could use? resist?

resist-dyeing

that's right, resist-dyeing is a technique of its own, impregnation of part of the fabric with a substance that prevents it from being dyed (sometimes in pattern).
Note from asker:
Hi. I can understand this may refer to 'resist-dyeing', but I'm looking for a way of translating 'réserve'.

binds/binding

depending on context, this is more neutral than ties or thread, could refer to to ties or stitching or ...

tie

if removable they can apparently be rubber bands, string or strips of cloths. Seems too simple I know but I'd say 'ties' describe them best!
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lori Cirefice : it can also be stitching, so ties could only work in certain contexts
