Spanish term
hacer universidad
Spanish to English
Art/Literary
Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
The sentence (originally in Catalan) is actually: "Haciendo universidad, amarás Lleida" and it's in a guide to Lleida University. The problem is how to meet the client's requirements, quote: "Está en el mismo sentido que "hacer país". No sólo significa "construir país" sino más, hecho con compromiso". Any ideas would be more than welcome!

Love university life, love Lleida
I think this is nicely alliterative and I hope you're charging more than five words for this! :-)
P.S. The client may need a little convincing because alliteration is not widely appreciated in Spain.

I suppose people will point out that when Lleida is pronounced in Catalan - it is not so alliterative. However, very few English readers are likely to pronounce it with a Catalan accent.

Note from asker:
I really like this one and I think I might even be able to persuade the client! I've decided to put one alternative in the translation but provide a few others as back-up - now I just have to decide whether to play safe and put a more literal translation in the text or go for this one. Thanks a lot for your inspired suggestion! |

Involving yourself in university
No suena bien el español del texto...
Note from asker:
I like the idea of "involve" - maybe "get involved in..."? Thanks for the suggestion. |

: Yup, I think the tone is right, now we just need a marketer's touch.

Lleida University, for Studies and for Life
"for Life" meaning feeling at home, settling down in the place
Note from asker:
Sounds very positive and catchy, tho' I can't make up my mind whether "studies" or "studying" is better. I think I'm going to have to give the client several alternatives! Thanks a lot. |

"Lleida" referring to the university... if that is, in fact, the name.

Note from asker:
Although it sounds good, unfortunately it doesn't mention the university at all - and this is a guide to the university. Thanks for the suggestion, though. |

Come for the University, stay for Lleida.
I think they are asking you to do something that may be impossible. I considered: commit(ment), pledge, admission, "let Lleida into/steal your heart" and a bunch of other possibilities to no avail. Hats off to anyone who can unpuzzle this one.

Since you like "involve -
"Get involved with our Uiniversity, fall in love with Lleida"
It has the funny play on words thing going for it.

I don't know if the client will like your suggestion but I do! Unfortunately I expect they'll want something more literal. Thanks for the ideas. |

: I like the "Let Lleida into your heart", it keeps the same sense... there is a compromise on your part. It incorporates the sense that you are involved in the process, without literally saying "involve yourself". Sounds nice.

Spanish term (edited):
Haciendo universidad, amarás Lleida
For the total college experience, you cannot do better than Lleida.
An idea.
Suerte.

How about:
Lleida: A foundation for learning and life
This is a phrase that seems impossible to translate literally. I also thought of using the idea of "falling in love with Lleida", but this would be more appropriate to marketing tourism than a university education/university environment.

A good suggestion but unfortunately it's the introductory title for the guide, so it needs to be much shorter. Thanks for the help all the same! |
