hacer universidad

Spanish to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
The sentence (originally in Catalan) is actually: "Haciendo universidad, amarás Lleida" and it's in a guide to Lleida University. The problem is how to meet the client's requirements, quote: "Está en el mismo sentido que "hacer país". No sólo significa "construir país" sino más, hecho con compromiso". Any ideas would be more than welcome!

Re. Melissa's query Sorry, I should've made it clearer. Lleida is a city in Catalonia (and the name of the university is the Universidad de Lleida - or Lérida, if you want to translate the Catalan name into Spanish). So we need to keep a reference to "university" somewhere in the title.

Some more thoughts... Perhaps "fostering" or "cultivating"? To include the idea of "build with commitment"?

I think this is nicely alliterative and I hope you're charging more than five words for this! :-)


P.S. The client may need a little convincing because alliteration is not widely appreciated in Spain.

I suppose people will point out that when Lleida is pronounced in Catalan - it is not so alliterative. However, very few English readers are likely to pronounce it with a Catalan accent.

I really like this one and I think I might even be able to persuade the client! I've decided to put one alternative in the translation but provide a few others as back-up - now I just have to decide whether to play safe and put a more literal translation in the text or go for this one. Thanks a lot for your inspired suggestion!

"for Life" meaning feeling at home, settling down in the place

Sounds very positive and catchy, tho' I can't make up my mind whether "studies" or "studying" is better. I think I'm going to have to give the client several alternatives! Thanks a lot.

I think they are asking you to do something that may be impossible. I considered: commit(ment), pledge, admission, "let Lleida into/steal your heart" and a bunch of other possibilities to no avail. Hats off to anyone who can unpuzzle this one.

agree Melissa Valeen : I like the "Let Lleida into your heart", it keeps the same sense... there is a compromise on your part. It incorporates the sense that you are involved in the process, without literally saying "involve yourself". Sounds nice.

How about:

Lleida: A foundation for learning and life

This is a phrase that seems impossible to translate literally. I also thought of using the idea of "falling in love with Lleida", but this would be more appropriate to marketing tourism than a university education/university environment.
