French term

à l'étouffée

I am not sure of the exact term to describe this neatly. 'Closed polythene method' perhaps? I mean I know they can be wrapped in polythene film or carried in polythene bags etc. But I can't think of the term to decribe the process.

I also have to translate the verb 'étouffer' relating to this technique. Basically, 'culture en atmosphère close, saturée d'humidité'.

Many thanks in advance!

literally this means "smothering".

So, maybe "under protective coverings" would cover cloche/glass and polytunnel

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you all for your very helpful answers and comments. In the end, I used 'propagation under cover'. Since Liz suggested 'under cover' first, just ahead of Claire, the points must go to her. I wish I could share them out. In any case, thank you again for all the help! Sheila"

under cover

would cover the various options if you're looking for a generic solution. This can range from a small-scale pot with a plastic bag over it for a home gardener taking fuchsia cuttings or a commercial-scale propagator with a domed lid, usually plastic, but could be glass too. I think you'll have to paraphrase for the equivalent verb though - propagating cuttings under cover perhaps.

using a propagator

Cloches, plastic bags, plastic bottles, cold frames, etc., are all propagators.

also see

You might also enter cuttings propagators in google images. It shows you how creative people can be at making their own propagators.

growing cuttings

This might lead you in the right direction
http://www.focusdiy.co.uk/page/
Dip the bottom 3cm (1in) of the prepared cutting into water and shake off the surplus before rolling the bottom inch into rooting hormone. Insert the cutting into seed trays or pots containing sharp or silver sand or a general purpose potting compost. Best results are normally achieved by using sharp sand only for most plants.

Ideally the tray or pot is then placed into a propagator. If not it can be covered with or placed into a large clear plastic bag and tied. Use canes or sticks to keep the bag from touching the cuttings. For plants which are more difficult to root it is best to use a controllable heated propagator.
