MatthewLaSon Mar 25, 2009:
Your comment to Linda made me think that you didn't think adults ever studied fairy tales. LOL. Have a nice day.
Wyley Powell (asker) Mar 25, 2009:
Au contraire... As an adult student of French literature, I studied fairy tales and other forms of stories/tales as literary genres.
MatthewLaSon Mar 25, 2009:
Adults don't study fairy tales? LOL.

stories and tales of the fantastic

'Contes et récits merveilleux' Marco said that 'merveilleux' could imply the supernatural, which I agree with! So, "stories and tales of the fantastic" would cover that.

agree Valerie SYKES : There are lots of 'tales of the fantastic' & 'stories of the fantastic' on Google. It sounds just right as a book title.

Enchanting stories and tales

Merveilleux can also mean supernatural. If that is what the course is about, then: "Stories and tales of the supernatural."

neutral ormiston : this might not sound right as the name of a course or as a literary genre. Wyley is the course for adults, are they studying existing literature or learning to write ?

disagree Valerie SYKES : The OED definition of 'enchanting' is 'delightfully charming or attractive'.

Fairy tales and fantasy

Hello,

That's what I'd call the course in English.

"Elective (at least 4 semester hours from lines 1 or 2 above) .... 335 Fairy Tales and Fantasy - LT Fairy tales are told and interpreted; interpretive models ..."

or "fairy tales and fantasy stories", "fantasy" by itself implies "stories".

neutral Christopher Newell : "Fairy tales" is "contes de fées", so not sure that this doesn't alter the writer's intent

Thanks, Christopher, but I have to disagree. Although the writer didn't say "de fées". I can't see any difference really between "contes de fées" and "contes merveilleux". Also, the translation has to sound like natural English.
disagree Valerie SYKES : I agree with Christopher. There is already a perfectly good phrase for fairy tales.

(Tales of / the Literature of) Enchantment

This does seem to be a literary genre. It does depend if the course is about writing or studying though. I feel 'merveilleux' has a deliberately 'magical' ring to it so it might not involve the darker genres of fantasy or the supernatural.
