Thanks, njbeckett, for the points!
hazmatgerman (X) Mar 27, 2009:
That's a general term for whenever the unit left port, irrespective of littoral, port or high seas use. It includes preparation (Seeklarmachen), departure and washing down and berthing: putting to sea. Regards.
njbeckett (asker) Mar 25, 2009:
Hi Ingeborg. Yes, it's a reference from the German Navy for a Petty Officer Second Class.
Ingeborg Gowans (X) Mar 25, 2009:
bezieht sich das auf militärische Aktivitäten?

at sea

, which he repeatedly demonstrated at sea.

That's how I would do it. Grüße!
Peer comment(s):

agree hazmatgerman (X) : This IMO would come closest to what is meant, w/o restricting the meaning to any sea area. However the preparatory and concluding work should be included as well.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks. I chose this because hazmatgerman seems to know what (s)he's talking about. I think seagoing passages might well be correct as well, but only 10 Google hits."

previous voyages

the German is very pretentious IMO but I would say this is the meaning ...

oops ... should read "voyages" of course ...

neutral hazmatgerman (X) : Rather than being pretentious i'd class the source term as 'precise' as it takes in all work prior and post seatime.

deep sea navigation

beanie: Durch diese Massnahmen machten wir das Offizierkorps freier für die grosse Seefahrt.
Kommentar: I'm brain dead. What do we say?

Ingrid: Deep sea navigation würde ich sagen. Offiziell heißt das Kapitänspatent große Fahrt "Master's certificate for deep sea navigation".

manouevres at sea / sea manouevres

http://www.presse-service.de/data.cfm/static/564057.html
I think this would cover every possibility
Peer comment(s):

agree Harald Moelzer (medical-translator) : would be my understanding, too

thanks, Harald, but apparently this isn't it
neutral hazmatgerman (X) : IMO that would exclude non-manouevring part such as transit, port calls, roadsted to name but a few.//As they say: context is king. Best.
