Artículo de fondo

Tracked this term down through Termium (and thedicc. Larousse español/francés.). My husband, who has taught "newsparerese" and newspaper writing in Spanish, confirms that this is the right term for those "human interest" articles that newspapers run on (as opposed to in depth, special articles on hard news, which would be something like "crónica especial" or "artículo especial")

reportaje

A "reportaje" is an article usually with a lot of photographs and fluff. This word is commonly used on both sides of the pond. On the other hand, "Artículo especial" doesn't really say anything to the Spanish reader.
