an idiomatic expression in Latin America would be:

"me despellejó con las críticas"


despellejar v. tr.

I see. Well, for some words, such as "popcorn", widely used terms are indeed available.

But for this particular one I can just say: good luck for finding a term which would sound just as good in Chile as it would on the streets of East Los Angeles and everywhere in between!

Latin America in general, including the US I am looking for two things in the answer to this translation: 1) a term that is equivalent in force to "rake me over the coals" since in English it is stronger than merely "chewing someone out" or "criticizing" someone; 2) the term that would have the wides usage in Latin America, in general.

For example, the different translations for "popcorn" include "crispeta" in Colombia, "cotufa" in Venezuela, "canguil" in Ecuador, "canchita" in Peru, etc. But two ways of translating "popcorn" that are widely used are "palitos" or "paillos" de maíz and ""rositas de maíz".

This translation is more difficult, because besides usage, the severity of being "raked over the coals" with all of its imagery, etc., is what I am after.

Question to Michael For what country is this translation intended?

The answer to this question makes all the difference in the world. As I'm sure you know, there is no such thing as "neutral Spanish", especially when it comes to the expressions like this one.
