Spanish term

horma

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Sports / Fitness / Recreation sports shoe design
PK - I think the technical term for this is 'last', but to be honest will anybody really have a clue what that is if they see this word on a website for sport shoes? Alternative suggestions or views on this usage appreciated :-)

La horma.
La **horma** es clave en el diseño del calzado. De ella depende el volumen interior, y por lo tanto, el confort y el ajuste que la zapatilla ofrecerá a cada pie. La ***horma** debe ser extremadamente precisa.

No es lo mismo un pie de hombre que un pie de mujer. Y tampoco es lo mismo practicar running o hiking. Cada actividad exige una **horma** diferente.

points Hi all, really sorry I closed this without awarding points but I couldn´t split them! I went for 'last' in the end and put Jack's suggestion of 'mould' beside the first mention of 'last'. Lots of thanks to everybody for their help and links.

solution I think Rosa's suggestion might solve the problem because in the end it does refer to the fit of the shoe. It occurs to me that James also makes a good point, and that most people don't really 'care' - but if the company wants it that way... what can you do? On the other hand, horma is as uncommon as its equivalent: shoetree.

Last Last it is then, apparently. Perhaps you could use 'fit' or 'shape' in the explanations you have to translate now.

RE: True Thanks Chris, that's the point, it does seem to be a term that is accepted in the Spanish world, but your average English reader (buyer) is gonna be left scratching their heads frankly. I guess my point is, what's the ultimate purpose of the translation/text? To sell trainers essentially right?

True I see what you mean. Actually, 'horma' is of common use in Spanish, at least down here. I agree it would have to be clarified, if used.

Interesting Question I can see from all the posts here that it is indeed referred to as the "last" - but I have to say, I'm at a loss as to how the average Joe-blo is going to understand this concept... As a keen jogger, I'm very interested in this sort of stuff, but I have to say, I've never heard of the term. And after clicking all the links I'm still struggling with the concept of it being some sort of "lasting" form/shape... Doesn't really lend much to texts trying to sell sports shoes!

Hi Lisa, The shoetree is used to make sure the shoe has the right shape inside. I think it makes sense in this context.

There is really no way of not using last for horma when shoe design is being mentioned, but a little clarification would be justified. This suggestion should not leave any doubt as to what is being written about.

FIT

The term 'horma del zapato' is commonly used in Chile. Horma is, as Lydia pointed out already, a shoe tree. Shoe-makers used to have different 'hormas' for every customer. Nowadays, they are hardly used, except for keeping the leather from shrinking when the shoes are not used in a long time. Today 'horma' means the way a particular shoe type fits, especially around the toes.
