competencias en lugares lejanos/lejos de casa
I feel "fly-away" in this case may be used in the sense that the contests take place in a location far away from the contestants' usual place of residence - possibly an exotic or otherwise appealing one. In my working environment that's the way that expression is used most often... Trouble is I can't think of any elegant way of rendering this into Spanish :-(
