ce n'est qu'un ensemble épars

French to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. etnografia

nothing more than a disparate collection

neutral Tony M : But don't you think it is important to render the 'épars' as well? / I thought that was more 'hétérogène'?

I sort of thought "disparate" covered that...?

agree Emma Paulay : Maybe "...of random notes" to convey the "épars". Personally, I don't think "scattered" goes with "collection".

agree Melissa McMahon : I prefer "scattered" for "epars" - would combine with eutychus for "scattered collection" :)

is only a collection of scattered notes

I don't think you need to translate 'rien que' literally here, that gives it too much emphasis. And logically, it is not the collection that is scattered but the notes, which have now been assembled into a collection. This is a common expression, which you can find many examples of if you google it.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jim Tucker (X) : yes - but the hypallage ("scattered collection") is not a problem either, and sounds quite natural
