Is there a "set phrase" for this expression?

TIA!

The author is discussing the XI-XII century archbishop Theophylact of Ohrid and his opinion on Cyril and Methodius.

Он хвалит славянских первоучителей Кирилла и Мефодия за то, что они создали азбуку, соответствовавшую грубости болгарского языка."

the first Slavic apostles [educators] [teachers]

I've seen all three of those versions, but always with "Slavic" or "Slavonic" in between "first" and whatever the noun is. You could change your word order accordingly.

agree gutbuster : Through their work they influenced the cultural development of all Slavs, for which they received the title "Apostles to the Slavs".

disagree gutbuster : Saints Cyril and Methodius were ab. 800 years away from the early church era

True enough. I imagine that's why the author attached the adjective славянский. Thank you, gutbuster.

pioneer/ trailblazer

Cyril and Methodius are often referred to as pioneers. In your case they are "pioneers in creating the alphabet/who created the alphabet". May be?

to preserve the part about their teaching, maybe something like "educators and pioneers" will work in the context?
