Russian term

не считает доблестью миссионерский жар;

Russian to English Social Sciences Religion
I know the literal meaning but I'm having trouble with the emphasis of the sentence (i.e. tema and rema and what that implies).

"Does not consider missionary activities to be heroism" is more of a neutral phrase. I'm wondering whether better might be:

"It is not missionary fervor that he considers heroism."

Pomogite!

Заметим, что Феофилакт нисколько не стремится приписать инициативу крещения Болгарии грекам воздавая должное катехизаторским усилиям Климента и явно гордясь собственными успехами на ниве просвещения болгар, архиепископ явно не считает доблестью миссионерский жар; инициатива самих варваров казалась ему предпочтительнее.

Discussion

Alexandra Taggart Dec 30, 2009:
The factual meaning of these words that "the fire from within" is not the same thing as an audacity (in situations-?).I believe, I sense where Deborah's confusion may hang.This "не считает " makes an impression that "a genuine zealot" was put down.No.Probably, they had debates, they "could not behave or say differently because it was their powerful belief that was driving them, it couldn't be called "their venture", that something they "dared"

does not think missionary fervor is especially heroic

clearly does not think missionary fervor is especially heroic
clearly does not view missionary fervor as being especially heroic

Or, "zeal," as Judith says. In other words, I think your first version captures the right emphasis, and there would be quite a number of ways to put it.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Alexandra Taggart : Unfotunately,it's impossible to unravel linguistically without knowing Ortodox attitudes to such matter.To read "monastic orders"-is really to look into religious matters,God's matter shouldn't be mistaken for that which belongs to Caesar.."-derivative

Thank you for the discussion, Alexandra, but I don't really understand what you mean. I was trying to suggest a way of writing it which would anticipate the rest of the sentence - what follows after the semi-colon.

does not believe missionary zeal (fervor) to be a virtue

I think "доблесть" in this instance is the same as "добродетель".

I think the meaning of the phrase is that "in Archbishop’s opinion Bulgarians accepted ideas of Christianity rather easily/willingly and not because missionaries were evangelizing them with great enthusiasm". May be you or other native speakers could find proper wording for my idea.
