No, excavador, the original text is quite clear and I have found the term in a number of other Spanish language texts, and have asked the engineers I work with. The term is "cajón excavador." This is from a CV describing the engineering features of a bridge he built.

Jeff, "excavador" or "excavado". From the photo, it looks like the latter.
