D.R. DE LA EDICIóN

Spanish to English Social Sciences Printing & Publishing Mexico
I'm doing the copyright page for a book, and I always get into problems with "edición". This piece of text is followed by the publisher's name, address, and e-mail. The next entry says:

Book copyright? Publisher's Copyright? In US texts, the line would read: "copyright (the symbol) 2010 by" but since the publication is actually occurring in Mexico, I want to make certain I've given a translation that will hold legally. Or perhaps I shouldn't translate it at all?? TIA!
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

oh, oh I should have hit preview -- my comments got inserted in the middle of the DRAE def. Sorry! It's been a long, long day and no end in sight !
Patricia Rosas (asker) May 24, 2010:
hmmm Well, it's a first edition but I still think that it is referring to "the book" and not the edition. The DRAE: 1. f. Producción impresa de ejemplares de un texto, una obra artística o un documento visual. But I may be wrong ...Perhaps I should use the copyright symbol and all rights reserved and just drop the "edición" part. I believe it's used because the next item in the list is the copyright for the art, which is held by INAH not by the publisher. They wanted to make a distinction between the book (or its text) and the art.
2. f. Conjunto de ejemplares de una obra impresos de una sola vez, y, por ext., la reimpresión de un mismo texto. Edición del año 1732. Primera, segunda edición.
Jackie Bowman May 24, 2010:
Oxford gives "publishing rights" for "derechos editoriales". Not sure if that helps.
philgoddard May 24, 2010:
In that case your question isn't very clear. Edición is edition in this context.
Patricia Rosas (asker) May 24, 2010:
D.R. means derechos reservados it's what to do with the de la edición part
philgoddard May 24, 2010:
This is the only other instance of the phrase that Google finds (it's on page 46):

I wonder if the R could stand for "responsable".

Peer comment(s):

agree Richard Boulter : I don't know my copyright law very well, but it seems that even though the art is separately copywritten, it would be included in the 'edition' copyright.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Frustratingly, I asked the client twice about this but in her response, she ignored my question so I'm not 100% sure, but this is close to the right answer -- whatever it may be ;-)"
