English term

Area lighting masts

English to French Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) Lighting highmast systems
Area lighting masts feature a ladder or climbing rungs, a
rest platform (optional) at 20m on the higher masts,
and an enclosed platform onto which floodlights can
be mounted on any side.

Practical, simple to build on site and cheap to transport, the ‘hub and spoke’ bracket arrangement is most common for Area lighting. They make it possible to achieve both 180° and 360° floodlight layouts.

mâts d'éclairage

Je pense que le terme "Area" n'est pas utilisé dans la traduction française.

Merci Gilles !
disagree Jennifer Levey : The translation must, in Asker's context, differentiate adequately between 'area' lighting (car-parks, places where the public queue to buy tickets, etc) and lighting of the place where the sport is played, for which the requirements are very different.

Thanks, and it is true that "Area lighting comes later on on the document...
disagree Tony M : I have to agree with MM here: the distinction being made is an important one, and this solution would amount to under-translation.

neutral Tony M : It seems from my research as if 'area lighting' means things like car parks, shunting yards, etc., and is as distinct from 'sports' or 'street' lighting

pylone d'éclairage de zone

Although there are plenty of precedents for 'pylone d'éclairage', I am much less sure about 'area' — to start with, I'm not even quite sure what specific distinction is being made here in EN? I assume it means 'for lighting a (large) area', rather than, say, for illuminating the façade of a building.

However, I feel very far from confident about the use of 'zone' for this in FR, and comments / alternative suggestions wll be most welcome!

I am somewhat puzzled by the fact that 'pylone d'éclairage' seems to return many times more results on Google than 'mât d'éclairage'.

In my research, I discovered that 'area lighting' is different from 'sports' and 'street' lighting — I think it means lighting large areas rather vaguely, mainly (usually) from above, as distinct from lighting sports stadia etc., where the lighting is more targetted, and usually from farther away.
Note from asker:
As you say, I think it means that they can light a "large area", definitely not the façade of a building, but a stadium or other sport venue (cricket ground, etc.)
