put it on the (woven) wire mesh

How to make a sculptural wire armature
There are many practical variations to this technique of adding to the armature. One that I have found very useful is to place cloth socked in plaster over the wire mesh

The materials in this range of woven wire mesh are very strong, long lasting and fantastic to work with.
Our range of Woven Wire mesh, A3 sheets, that are ideal for sculpture and model making.

: This seems like a possibility, if the text is indeed dealing with sculpture of this sort. It would be nice if the asker could confirm. I would guess there is a clearer and more common term for constructing the armature. "Get started on the armature"?

Thank you, David! I based my answer on what I could glean from the example.

odd - to access the armature
I wonder why this expression is used. It SEEMS to mean "start work", akin to se mettre à l'ouvrage, se mettre au métier (loom).
However I fail to see why that should be a problème à résoudre, unless of course this artist is of the layabout type!
Maybe, rather, se mettre à means "to access", i.e. given that his work is tall, he needs special access equipment to be able to apply whatever material to the (wire?) armature underlying his work.

* A hunch - I got there via "maille" as used in crystallography.
