What does the 3 stand for?

57 most probably stands for 昭和57年.  So my guess is that the tax return form provides numeric options for the imperial era names (元号): 1. 明治 2. 大正 3. 昭和 4. 平成, and this tax payer selected No. 3. This is too wild a guess?

3 over here may mean SHOWA (昭和)

Meiji(1)..Taisei(2)..Showa(3) in this order

If I'm not mistaken, I think "3" here stands for 昭和.

I'm just guessing from the link below. Next to 生年月日、it says 明、大、昭、meaning 明治、大正、昭和, and this person is born on 昭和57年, since there is no 57th year for neither 明治nor大正。
