What is Sotos syndrome?
Sotos syndrome is a disorder characterized by a distinctive facial appearance, overgrowth in childhood, and learning disabilities or delayed development. Characteristic facial features include a long, narrow face; a high forehead; flushed (reddened) cheeks; and a small, pointed chin. In addition, the outside corners of the eyes may point downward (down-slanting palpebral fissures). This facial appearance is most notable in early childhood. Affected infants and children tend to grow quickly; they are significantly taller than their siblings and peers and have an unusually large head. Adult height is usually in the normal range, however.
People with Sotos syndrome often have intellectual impairment, and most also have behavioral problems. Frequent behavioral issues include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), phobias, obsessions and compulsions, tantrums, and impulsive behaviors. Problems with speech and language are also common. Affected individuals often have problems with sound production, stuttering, and a monotone voice. Additionally, weak muscle tone (hypotonia) may delay other aspects of early development, particularly motor skills such as sitting and crawling.

What is Intellectual Impairment (II)?

The Department of Education and Training (DET) has endorsed the DSM-IV-TR (2000) definition of Intellectual Impairment (Intellectual Disability) for entry to the category of intellectual impairment.

An internationally accepted definition for intellectual impairment has been developed by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) whose members include professionals in related fields, parents, students and others.

The AAIDD (2002) states that:

"Intellectual disability is characterised by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behaviour as expressed in conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills. This disability originates before the age of 18."

The student's identified level of functioning results in activity limitations and participation restrictions at school requiring significant educational adjustments.

The following five assumptions are essential to the application of this definition:

1. Valid assessment considers cultural and linguistic diversity as well as differences in communication, sensory, motor, and behavioural factors.
2. Within an individual, limitations often coexist with strengths.
3. An important purpose of describing limitations is to develop a profile of needed supports.
4. With appropriate personalised supports over a sustained period, the life functioning of the person with intellectual impairment generally will improve.

Further information on the Department of Education and Training's (DET) disability category of intellectual impairment is available on the Education Adjustment Program website.
