French term

avoir une bonne visibilité de

French to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy doctoral training
I'm not clear as to whether this expression used here means that members of XXX (a new grouping of universities) will be highly visible to young researchers, or whether the young researchers will be visible to members of XXX.

This new concept of doctoral training will certainly give XXX members a high profile around the world, but what exactly do you think is meant here, please?

TIA

Sheila Wilson (asker) Nov 20, 2010:
@ Jessica: XXX is a grouping of institutions - all its members are institutions, too
@ Imanol: Glad you share my view (if I understood it correctly) :-)
@ all others: thanks for the help. I'll get back to you with points etc
Imanol Nov 20, 2010:
Probably les établissements, but it's hard to tell with any certainty
Jessica Edwards Nov 20, 2010:
A point to clarify Are *les membres de XXX* individuals, or the member institutions?
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Nov 20, 2010:
Suggested rendering. For the record, I go along with CKST and Imanol in the who is doing what problem here :

"XXX partner institutions may invite experienced researchers for a few days or even months, but do not have access to the set up available to young researchers. However, given the level of European and global mobility enjoyed by the members of XXX, the more experienced researchers will have their younger counterparts very much in view. XXX will be particularly inclined to enhance young researchers knowledge of the human resources available and to strengthen the attraction of research units."
Imanol Nov 20, 2010:
Second one, absolutely My reaction to this piece of literature is : pourquoi dire les choses simplement quand on peut employer des tournures absconses, et flirter avec les solécismes ?
CKSTraductions Nov 20, 2010:
it's the second one the member's of xxx will have access to (what) the young researchers (are doing)
cchat Nov 20, 2010:
I think from the context that the best interpretation is that because they move around a lot, they will be able to identify potential excellence in young researchers. And that XXX is willing to aid them in that mission.

to be able to observe

I understand this to mean that the members of the university grouping will be able to see the young researchers and the work that they are undertaking. Perhaps 'observe' would sound a little more natural than using 'visible'?

The members of XXX will be able to observe the young researchers.
Note from asker:
Thanks: I went with "be in a good position to observe"

the young researchers will be visible to members of XXX.

I also think that this is what is meant here. This seems to be confirmed by the subsequent sentence which states that '...XXX consentira donc un effort spécifique pour accroître cette connaissance ...'

members ... will have good insight into

or: have easy access to (observe) the young...
hope this is helpful
