Thanks, Gerry, for explaining the term "re-establishing". I stick to "stabilizing vital signs" then. "zajištění" really does mean something else then just "měření, sledování" It refers to what a paramedic does when he arrives at a site of an accident. Of course, it includes taking vital signs, but there is usually something wrong with them which requires immediate action(s). And all those actions are covered by the term "zajištění". I am a health care professional myself so I am sure about this. We also use a term "sledování" or "monitorování fyziologických funkcí", and that refers to taking/monitoring/measuring vital signs. Besides "stabilizing", "providing for" sounds also reasonable to me.

well, I got it wrong, zjisteni, zajisteni...missed it in my haste...but at the end of the day, based on your argument Hely here what we actually seem to be implying is "providing first aid", where maintaining good vital signs is the primary task, that means all the things we learned in combat lifesavers course like controlling bleeding, treatment for shock, etc...in other words, it's too broad a term, client should explain better, I'd go to the client for clarification...close cooperation with willing clients is like greasing the wheels to accuracy.

Re-establishing infers that the patient was dead. I stick by my watch/measure/monitor, etc, as the stabilization, etc, is taken for granted - they are not going to stand around and say 'hmm interesting, the blood pressure appears to be rocketing on that patient, I wonder how XY in the next bed is doing', or similar :) But there is nothing wrong with 'stabilize vital signs' - several google hits. it just probably isn't what I would put.

during my intensive first aid course I remember hearing "stabilising" a lot, but never "re-estabilishing". Sounds odd.

Thanx for all suggestions. I'll probably combine them and use "stabilizing vital signs". The Czech phrase "zajištění životních funkcí" does not mean just measuring them but also taking action to reestablish them (such as clearing the airways etc.). So probably "stabilizing" or "re-establishing" would suit the best? Or maybe "ensuring" but that sounds weird to me.

I took a two week intensive first aid course in Canada and would not say "securing". "Stabilising" implies to get an organ under control and correctly functioning.

watch/measure/monitor vital signs

ensuring that they are all in order is taken for granted, naturally :) Vital signs are monitored at set intervals - could be 10 minutes, 30 minutes, etc, depending on the condition of the patient, and are acted on accordingly.
You could add 'basic' as well, but this is unnecessary as all health professionals know what they are - there are some extra ones as well, but they aren't always monitored.

sounds closer to the actual act of measuring pulse, temp., BP, etc. you "take" them.
