cc in nyc Apr 11, 2011:
My 2¢ I always ask for photos, when there are captions. Sometimes the focus of the caption needs to be changed slightly as the language changes.
MD64 (X) (asker) Apr 10, 2011:
You're right ! It was just a suggestion, not really what I meant to write.
Tony M Apr 10, 2011:
Thumbs down for your suggestion: "Les jours qui précèdent sa transformation personnelle"

I think that wouldn't represent the source text at all well; usually, "in the days before" doesn't mean 'in the last few days just before something happened', but rather as françoise has said « à l'époque où... »

And also, there's nothing to say that there necessarily was any kind of 'transformation' — the remark is probably slightly ironic, saying "See just how awful he looked in those days, if only personal stylists had existed back then, he could have used one"
MD64 (X) (asker) Apr 10, 2011:
Without any photo it's sometimes rather difficult. I'll ask for them.
Thanks for your help !
Jonathan MacKerron Apr 10, 2011:
they are implying that nowadays no one would look as scruffy as Keith did then, because now stars all have "personal stylists" to adivse them on their image.
kashew Apr 10, 2011:
Why not ask for all the photos? - that's what I would do! The only way to do a good job. I've seen too many captions translated "blind" and ridiculously.
MD64 (X) (asker) Apr 10, 2011:
Yes, it's a caption to a photograph, probably with Richards and Jones. Unfortunately I don't have any photo at my disposal as an aid for translating, only the captions. So I thought to translate in this way : "Les jours qui précèdent sa transformation personnelle", but I'm not sure at all !! Thanks
kashew Apr 10, 2011:
Photo caption? Seems to refer to something in "the photo". Maybe JM's thing about Keef's teeff.
Jonathan MacKerron Apr 10, 2011:
is it a reference to the way Keith Richards used to look in the old days with his bad teeth and all?? If it is a caption to a photograph with him and Brian Jones, then I'm pretty sure that they are referring to Keith's looks, before he got his teeth fixed...

Note from asker:

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : might work, though if as I suspect the comment is ironical, this would be contrary to that notion.
