Spanish term

que les fueron inoculados

Non-PRO Spanish to English Art/Literary Journalism género: ensayo

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

that they inoculated against

Inoculation against the disease had been introduced into Europe from the Middle East early in the century and subsequently conveyed to the American colonies ...

Sorry, Now that I see the context, it should inoculate WITH, not against.

agree ARS54 : ...'with', yes (but why PRO?) / xoxo

Cheers and thanks, ARS54.

Many thanks, Mike. (with/against issue here)
neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : My understanding, from past experience, is that the subject were inoculated WITH the disease, to test the effect of medicines. These are horrific stories.

Muriel, look at my note. When I saw the context in another question, I added it. Yes, dreadful.

that they were inoculated with

My understanding is that this is about a shameful period in history when people in public institutions were inoculated with diseases to test the effect of drugs. (I'm on a very slow connection and can't search the Internet.)

Spanish term (edited): que les fueron inoculadas

they were given

Generally, animals are 'given' a disease or condition (such as cystic fibrosis, cancer, multiple sclerosis, rabies, equine herpes or avian influenza) then experiments are done to investigate:

By the way, it should be "inoculadas" in Spanish.

"(illnesses) inoculated into them"

Many of the chimpanzees that arrive at the camp suffer from illnesses inoculated into them for testing on them the effects of (different) drugs: a high number of the ones who have stayed there longer are HIV positive.
