@Richard I do not think so but may be. We are describing type of terrains here. Can it be sandy clay with very small sized gravels??
Richard Hedger Jul 7, 2011:
Sieve analysis? Does this have anything to do with particle size analysis?
Tony M Jul 7, 2011:
Nope! First of all, note that it is 'passées', which would be 'pasts' in the plural, but really make no sense at al here.

I think you need to be looking rather at the other broad meaning of 'passée', i.e. a pass (rather than a past)

Even a general dictionary like R+C gives: track or flight as suggestions in specific contexts, I feel sure you'll need to look along those sort of lines to find the correct term in a geological context.

"passée" semble pouvoir être aussi bien intercalée qu'en surface
et on trouve "gravel bands" en relation avec le sable et l'argile. A vérifier.

band, (thin layer or vein) or intercalation (intercalated with), see the first occurences in the "Dictionnaire des Sciences de la Terre"-

..., car une passée de graviers stériles de 5 cm d'épaisseur (apport lié à une érosion, elle-même vraisemblablement reliée à la déforestation) rompt la continuité des spectres en D3 comme en D4. ...
