French term

prévoyant

Non-PRO French to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters political video game
Hi,

I am translating a press release for a video game that revolves around world politics, and I am having trouble coming up with the proper translation for "prévoyant" in the following context:

Just another suggestion

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Does this not rather mean avant-garde, progressive-thinking rather than suggesting someting to do with strategy?// Yes, it has everything to do with strategy, cf. my explanation and additional note.

For me it could have both meanings, and a good game player has strategy..
agree Kelly Harrison : For example: j'avais prévu de récuperer mon chien, alors je pris sa laisse avec moi en partant de la maison 'forward thinking, strategic opponents'?

who have thought ahead

The word is being used here in to describe the strategic thinking your opponents may possess!

THinking ahead, in terms of a game is of course related to strategy. This sort of game would no doubt be described as one requiring strategy, the ability to plan ahead, anticipate not only one's own moves but those of the opponent, indeed to anticipate one's own moves and play with strategic force!

The term "forward-thinking" in most decent dictionaries is described as meaning progressive or avant-garde. I see that the term is used from time to time to mean plan ahead. Whilst a fan of
language being alive and therefore evolving, this particular evolution on this term os not one I am fan of. To me it perverts meaning to the point of being misleading.
American English often leads the way to fast evolution (this is not a criticism folks, an observation!) and perhaps this term is more often used in AE than in BE with this meaning. It therefore may be perfectly appropriate for the context. ;-)
