Ferro
Qualities: Iron ore is an abundant material in the earth’s crust and it is believed to make up a large percentage of the mantle and core. It is a heavy and soft material that is relatively easy to form hot or cold. It is classified as wrought or cast. Wrought iron contains less than 0.2% carbon and cast iron contains between 2–4% carbon. Iron with a carbon content between 0.2–2% is classified as steel.
wrought iron= ferro battuto
e
cast iron = ghisa
ma qui non "ferro battuto" non c'entra nulla : Wrought iron contains less than 0.2% carbon ???

ferro affinato/ puddellato
has a low carbon content, but it retains fibres of slag which help to render it more malleable than steel

acciaio dolce
Secondo me la traduzione corretta è questa (in effetti non è "ferro" se contiene carbonio :-) )

Secondo me perché quello con carbonio tra 0,2 e 2% è "acciaio" (non dolce).

Note from asker:
ciao Manuela, ma allora perché distingue il cast iron e wrought iron da "iron with a carbon content between 0.2–2% is classified as steel"? |
Discussion
Cast iron is made up of iron, carbon and small amounts of silicon. There are different types, including grey, white, ductile and malleable. They are differentiated by the formation of carbon in the iron matrix and alloying elements. Generally, cast iron has good dampening properties and machinability, is resistant to fatigue and corrosion and is difficult to weld due to the high carbon content
Types of iron and steel
Cast iron has already been mentioned above.
Wrought iron
If all the carbon is removed from the iron to give high purity iron, it is known as wrought iron. Wrought iron is quite soft and easily worked and has little structural strength. It was once used to make decorative gates and railings, but these days mild steel is normally used instead.
