Swedish term

utsättande

Swedish to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
"Vanligtvis återställs normala serumelektrolytnivåer genom tillförsel av elektrolyt-supplement och utsättande av NN."

From the undesirable effects listed in a Summary of Product Characteristics for the drug NN. If this is not an error in the use of "utsättande" for the original English "discontinuing", what am I missing?
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 cessastion/withdrawal
4 +3 discontinuation

Have come across this often enough

Is it the Swedish usage u don't get? From my Swedish lessons it sounds counterintuitive to me, too! But that's what the dictionary, and references say...
Charles Ek (asker) Mar 13, 2012:
Okay, I'll accept that "utsättning" is used, on the basis of DAG001's contribution and what appears at http://www.fass.se/LIF/produktfakta/fakta_lakare_artikel.jsp... But I'm still wondering how we get to 'discontinuation" or "cessation" from "utsättande". I'm not at all convinced by a single reference from a forum poster and the output from a machine translation.

utsättande also means discontinuation See the links:
http://www.familjeliv.se/Forum-24-95/m59421575.html

And not only in the sense of discontinuing taking a drug. See these two articles:

cessastion/withdrawal

Will answer this way... don't think it's an error.

This is what is used when 'discontinuing' a drug treatment. From my (analogue) 'Medicinsk ... Ordbook'
Check out wiki--http://www.sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utsättning_(medicin)
Example sentence:

Usually normal levels ...are achieved with .... and cessation/withdrawal of NN.

discontinuation

discontinuation of a drug

Normal levels of ... are restored through ... and discontinuation of NN. Doesn't it make sense?
Note from asker:
And how do you get from "utsättande" (normally translated as "exposing" or "exposure") to "discontinuation"?

This is pure Swedish - no machine translation - and pretty clear to me.

Okay, thanks for this new link. I accept that as a suitable reference.
