Italian term

rottura artefattuale delle cellule

Italian to English Medical Livestock / Animal Husbandry
This is from a text on hereditary disease in certain breeds of dogs, specifically morphological abnormalities of granulocytes and monocytes. I don't understand the use of "artefattuale" in this context.

The full sentence is: "I granuli che si liberano dopo **rottura artefattuale** delle cellule si colorano normalmente" (as opposed to those that appear colourless).

Any help would be appreciated!

TIA
Katharine
