given the above extra information, 'wooden arm/leg' seems unlikely ...

Maybe it is some kind of dead arm syndrome or similar?

Jiří probably didn't notice that I suggested "numb and stiff". Besides that, if you look up "numb" in a Czech-English dictionary you will find: "necitlivý, znecitlivělý, ztuhlý, strnulý..." Isn't it just what "zdřevěnělý" means?

dřevěný is NOT numb Numb denotes lack of feeling, totally numb = paralyzed. This is entirely different from "dřevěný" which denotes lack of flexibility, better translated as "stiff" or "wooden" (yes, it has the same metaphorical meaning in English as in its Czech counterpart).

maybe it means "numb" It sounds really odd. If it's what the patient said about his condition then it could mean "numb and stiff" as we use a term "zdřevěnělý" in this sense in informal Czech. I don't think that the physician meant artificial legs.

More context should be 'prostetické', and later it says 'oper P paty po sražení autem v dětství' - if he has no legs anyway (if it really means he has artificial limbs), I can't see what bearing this might have on his current condition.

We use a similar term "zdřevěnělý" in informal Czech to refer to "numb" or "dead" (arm/leg). I don't think that the physician meant an artificial leg.

wooden / stiff hand/leg

Wooden is used in the same metaphorical sense as "dřevěný" in Czech, also synonymous to stiff. Not necessarily numb, though.

wooden prostethic (P) arm/leg

It is the case indeed. Capital P in the text stands for Prosthetic which denotes an artificial limb. The usual reference to the material used to making such a limb is then plain "wood".
