espelho invertido

Portuguese to English Other Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Hi, I'm having one of those moments when I can't think how to say something in my own language! I keep thinking of 'flip side' but I don't think that's quite right. And mirror image would be the same, right?

I also wondered about changing it slightly, to say 'this idea inverts an earlier one' or something similar. All suggestions very welcome.

"Esta ideia mallarmeana [ie referring to Mallarmé's idea that 'everything exists in order to end up in a book'], é espelho invertido de uma anterior que propõe que o próprio universo é um livro – como em Campanella, para quem “o mundo é o livro onde o juízo eterno escreve os seus conceitos”; ou como em Galileu, que usa a metáfora do “livro da natureza” escrito em linguagem matemática."

thanks in advance

Discussion

Lucy Phillips (asker) Jun 22, 2012:
thanks for all the helpful ideas Gilla and airmailrpl - I did use 'perfect inversion' in the end, because I wanted to make the reflection/inversion clear. I think both 'antithesis' and 'mirror image' were possibilities, but I awarded the points for 'mirror image' since I think it was closest to the idea.
Evans (X) Jun 22, 2012:
I think we are all confused by mirrors. In a mirror, left becomes right and right becomes left, or if the mirror is concave top becomes bottom... No wonder it baffles us. A mirror doesn't reverse the image in the sense of 'the other side of the coin', the opposite, the obverse, yet I do think is what is meant here. The expression 'smoke and mirrors' isn't used to mean confusion for nothing! No wonder Lewis Carroll had such fun when he sent Alice Through the Looking Glass.
airmailrpl Jun 22, 2012:
espelho invertido actually "espelho invertido" is ambiguous - since a mirror image reverses the original image, then an "espelho invertido" would make the image exactly the same as the original image and NOT reversed.
airmailrpl Jun 22, 2012:
mirror image mir·ror im·age
Noun:

An image or object that is identical in form to another, but with the structure reversed.
Evans (X) Jun 22, 2012:
I think 'perfect inversion' is quite a good solution. Mirror image is too ambiguous, as it is used too often to mean exact image rather than reverse image, which is clearly what is meant here.
Lucy Phillips (asker) Jun 22, 2012:
could be, Gilla - I'm actually tending back towards 'mirror image', also suggested below. My uncertainty as to whether it means 'identical' or 'same but opposite' is obviously shared by others though http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-4114... :) I think it should mean 'same but opposite', logically, but to save any confusion in the reader, I might use 'perfect inversion'. What do you think?
Evans (X) Jun 21, 2012:
I wonder if a better approach might be to use a verb rather than a noun to express this: something like: 'reflects back an earlier idea...' or 'reflects an earlier opposing idea...'.
Lucy Phillips (asker) Jun 21, 2012:
sorry, I should add that the idea of reflection or something similar is (imo) important - the text goes on to say "Do mundo-livro ao livro-mundo", so I would like to reflect that in my choice of phrase. Thanks!

This is the first thought that came to me to express this idea being the direct opposite.

Would it fit your register?
Note from asker:
I think the register is fine, I think it sounds the opposition might be too forceful though - the idea (I think) is like they are two sides of the same coin, in a way. It's about the connection between the world and the book and how this goes both ways...
