Pegó fuerte = hit a nerve
it does mean "seriously upset", but to me "hit a nerve" just sounds a little bit better for a literary translation, which I guess is what you're working on

or

I am partial to "offering" myself, in this case.
If you prefer "hit a nerve", which GerardoCaceres suggested above, you could also say "This offering hit a nerve amongst the arrogant/proud members of the seemingly wealthy society"
or
"This aid/donation/charity/offering was a bitter blow for the arrogant and seemingly wealthy society"
