Discussion

Jonathan MacKerron Sep 11, 2012:
It is important to note that the first line "Listen my children and you shall hear" is taken directly from Longfellow's poem, so you need to find the official translation of that poem into French.
Jonathan MacKerron Sep 11, 2012:
You need to first understand this traditional poem to fathom what Patti Smith is saying here:

Smith is calling young people to arms (here to march in the streets), much as this traditional poem did in describing the Revolutionary War.

ou "tous unis" pour éviter la fâcheuse expression sexiste (un seul homme)

défiler dans les rues tel un seul Homme

Another suggestion. To my mind, "march" has a strong military connotation so it is not enough to translate it to "marcher".

Also, while "tel un seul homme" might sound sexist, if you refer to it as "Hommes" with a capital H, you are no longer talking about men but human beings of all genders, eliminating the possibly sexist feeling to the sentence.

pour défiler à l'unisson
