Phil I classified it as law because they are discussing contract amendments among other things such as outstanding debts, so basically it is business correspondence.

Rich You classified the question as law, so is this a letter from a lawyer concerning a lawsuit?
If it were an official document (say, a presidential decree), then the revolutionary stuff would be wholly appropriate. If it's business correspondence, I maintain that it should be left out.

Why leave this out? It is clearly from a country that has had a socialist revolution and it is clearly in the letter/email. I think to censor this is beyond the translator's remit.

There are plenty of examples of this type of greeting on the web. For example:

OK but I think we would need to know from what source (Government, private body, etc.) the letter was written to translate this appropriately

Leave it out.

Any attempt to translate it would sound silly. This is one instance where you're justified in censoring the original.

In fact I'd just translate the whole paragraph as "Thank you for your letter of XXX, which I received on XXX".

disagree AllegroTrans : silly or not, it is part of the letter. I do not consider that a translator has the right to cut something like this out just because it would not be said in his/her own country.

So when you translate a letter from French, do you end it: "I beseech you, Sir/Madam, to accept the assurance of my most distinguished sentiments"? Or do you say "Yours sincerely"?
