Actually, the mid-wicket fielder and the forward short leg fielder are both in close-up positions where they often need to throw the ball at the stumps but these don't equate with a pitcher at baseball, who throws the baseball to the catcher from the mound to get a striker to retire. Not really very comparable, unfortunately.

Discussion
Forward short leg stands very close to the batsman, hence "short", on the leg side (his left as he faces the bowler, if he's right-handed), hence "leg", and just in front of the crease, hence "forward". Like the other close fielders his job is to catch the ball if the batsman mishits it or it snicks the bat, thereby dismissing the batsman. It's a very dangerous position, and nowadays forward short legs always wear a helmet. People have been killed by being struck on the head by a misdirected pull or hook shot (square shorts on the leg side). Not for nothing are certain fielding positions close to the batsman technically called "silly" (silly mid-on, silly mid-off, silly point).
