French term

ouvertures

French to English Marketing Business/Commerce (general) Retail store development
RESERVES AUX DOTATIONS, OUVERTURES OU REMODLINGS

This item appears in a list of 'critical products', in which list appear some very prosaic things like cleaning equipment, envelopes, wall charts, bins for the toilets etc. It is a supermarket management document. The word 'ouverture' appears next to many of the items in the list, as do the words 'Dotation' or 'Remodling' - quite randomly, it would seem.

The only thing I can think that 'ouverture' could mean here would be some sort of product launch or promotion. 'Remodling', a bizarre looking word, I am understanding to mean some sort of refurbishment, and 'dotations' provisions or allocations. As it is a list without much surrounding context, it all seems rather vague! Am trying to contact client for more info, but no luck as yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Very likely When you 'doter' something with something, you equip or fit it with it, so that would certainly make sense. It does sometimes help to go back to the 'original' meaning behind a word ;-)

Oddly enough, this is where I find doing FR corsswords amazingly helpful: makes me think more laterally about the meaning of words!

aha.... ....I think 'dotations' here is actually referring to 'equipment' (not seen it used like that before but it is in my Larousse.....

Hi Tony, Thanks for your input.... yes, I think actually, on reflection, you might be right. That was my original thought, and then I wondered whether it was referring more to store events (like promotions), but I think possibly not. As for your question, um, well, it is written in caps in my doc, but I am pretty sure RESERVES means 'réserves' rather than store room or 'réservés'... yes, all rather confusing. Thanks.... will try to figure it out or simply raise it as an uncertainty due to context. Have a good day!

Surely it just means "items that are needed when opening a new store" — as distinct from those required when "remodelling an existing store" (note that the spelling of words like 'remodelling' often gets corrupted when they are used in FR, and often heard rather than read).
As for 'dotation', haven't a clue, though you might be able to work it our from which items these are? Maybe it's something like things that need to be provided annually...

Can you tell how the 'réserves' is being used — or is it in fact 'réservés'? Does it seem to mean 'store room', or perhaps 'supplies / stores'?
