I thought afterwards of 'amuse-gueules", savoury toasts very common in meetings in France, served on plates as an "apéritif"

agree Tony M : Not really 'toast', but I think 'tartine' could well describe the right sort of thing, albeit without specifying the type of bread support being used. Maybe 'mini tartine' to suggest it isn't a great big slice of bread!

Merci Tony !
neutral Sarah Bessioud : Tartine reflects the fact that these have the 'filling' on top, but it doesn't imply that these are rolls, not ordinary bread.

Yes i agree, it's not exacty french bread, it's a bread roll. But the english expression uses "topped", not "filled"; there isn't a word in french to describe this to my knowledge but tartine (salée)

petits pains fourrés/garnis

"bread rolls" sont des petits pains avec le terme "topped" cela veut dire qu'ils sont soient saupoudrés de céréals/sucre ou pavots ou éventuellement fourré

neutral Sarah Bessioud : This would be the case if the bread rolls here were being sold in a bakery, but as they are being served in a business meeting, I believe it refers to open rolls with a topping.

neutral Tony M : I agree with JDM: here, we are talking about some kind of 'open sandwich' filling. In EN, we wouldn't say 'topped' on its own, if it meant sesame or sugar or something, we'd always say 'sugar-topped' etc.

neutral Marie LE MEN (X) : Yes this would be a bread roll open with savoury topping (ham and cheese for example, or pâté or whatever... amuse-gueule is a possibility

neutral emiledgar : I don't think that these buns are filled, but rather that they have some sort of topping such as onions or poppy seeds.

assortiment de petits pains ouverts (garnis)

Assortiment de petits pains ouverts, ou, petits pains ouverts garnis.

Given the context here of food being provided in a meeting, this refers to bread rolls that have been cut in two across the middle with a topping, such as chicken, tuna, ham and cheese etc. The confusion here comes from "topped" used on its own, whereas this type of buffet food is often referred to in English as "open topped bread rolls".

Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : I think the problem is that the idea of a roll is usually that you close it round the filling, so here what we have is an 'open sandwich' made using ½ a roll.

Thanks, Tony. It's important to state the 'open' and the 'roll' IMO, to make a difference between these and what follows in the list - the standard sandwiches with fillings.
