Spanish term

deducción de responsabilidades penales

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law (general)
I'm probably over thinking this, hence the question...

Not sure about "La deducción de responsabilidades penales [...] exigido por homosexuales", as homosexuality is not illegal in Honduras, although same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples are constitutionally banned, so are they demonstrating for more rights or against the impunity of such crimes?

Context:

Good point Tony! So I'm thinking they are demanding "criminal accountability" or "that the perpetrators be brought to justice". Luis' answer seems to work too. Thanks Luis!
Toni Castano Apr 29, 2013:
@Rich Deducir responsabilidades penales = Determine/establish criminal liability. "Deducción" is just the noun derived from "deducir".
philgoddard Apr 28, 2013:
I'm not sure what deducción means, but I think you're misunderstanding "por". It means by, not for.

enforcement (operation) of the criminal justice system

They want effective enforcement (operation) of the criminal justice system... which seems to be failing or it is not being effective to safeguard and protect this population sector.

Hope this helps you.

agree Toni Castano : I agree with you, although I must concede that "enforcement" is perhaps a bit too ambiguous. But overall your translation works.

disagree Toni Castano : I hardly understand what you mean by this translation. // Nothing to do with that, you are misunderstanding the source. Please see my note for Rich above.

criminal prosecutions

I think what is meant in the SL is determination of criminal liability. Technically, this would be a finding, ruling or decision on guilt as to a specific set of facts presented at trial. However, you may consider something that may sound more “natural” in English -- especially in a news article. For example:
prosecutions
criminal prosecutions
that criminals be brought to justice

... demanded prosecutions and a cease to violence....
... demanded criminal prosecutions and a cease to violence....
... demanded a cease to violence and that criminals be brought to justice....

Moreover, it is the Ministerio Público’s responsibility to prosecute, and it was in front of their building that they were demonstrating.
