German term

Wird die Achse außen geschnitten

German to English Marketing Business/Commerce (general) Chart description / Eigenschaftsspinne
This is regarding a description of a web-like chart (Eigenschaftsspinne).

The whole sentence is:

"Jede Eigenschaft bekommt eine eigene Achse. Nehmen wir das Beispiel Sicherheit. Wird die Achse außen geschnitten, bedeutet das Best in Class, die Mitte stellt den Durchschnitt dar und innen ist schlechter als Durchschnitt."

An example of this chart can be viewed under this link / page 13 (the chart itself has not been provided by the client, only text):

Potentially: "If the axis / centreline is crossed on the outside..."

Klaus Of course, outermost periphery is somewhat of an oxymoron because periphery IS the farthest extension of a space
Klaus Schmirler May 21, 2013:
outside = on the outermost periphery I think it is sloppily worded, but understandable. If you look at such a radar chart, it has a center ("inside") and several circumferences, that are "out". If you lose the passive voice, it is probably clear in English too: "If the axis intersects an outer circumference/periphery, ..."

[It's still sloppy since it crosses all the inner lines too.]
Cilian O'Tuama May 21, 2013:
google "Spinnendiagramm" To me, each of the Eigenschaften is seemingly being depicted by a line (axis) emanating from the origin (0:0...). And then some curve or other is superimposed and shows which Eigenschaften are above or below average.
Cilian O'Tuama May 21, 2013:
@Klaus, But on the outside of what?
gangels (X) May 21, 2013:
I believe it just means 'positioned' or 'inserted'.

"when the axis is positioned on the outside', it connotes 'best of class', when positioned at midpoint, 'average', and within, 'below average'
